Red Cross Instructor Certification Class

posted Jun 9, 2011, 12:00 PM by Dave Bateman   [ updated Jun 9, 2011, 12:03 PM by Web Master ]

There is an opportunity that can be made into a reality, if only there is enough interest expressed!

Through the special relationship that exists between the American Red Cross (specifically, the Triangle Area chapter) and the Boy Scouts of America (Occoneechee Council), Unit Leaders can become Red Cross Instructors.

Prerequisite: Current Adult CPR and First Aid certifications.

Here are the specifics:

The new instructor course will be a blended learning offering (part online and in class room) with the following:

·         An online orientation to the American Red Cross

·         An online session that provides an overview of the instructor course and the First Aid/CPR/AED program (approx. 1.5 hrs)

·         A classroom session where instructor candidates practice teaching and evaluating skills (approx. 9 hrs).

·         An orientation to administering course records in the Red Cross Learning Center.

The blended learning component is required and is only available online.  This must be completed before entering the classroom session.  Instructor candidates will need access to a computer with online access.

A pre-requisite is that the student must be current in Adult CPR/AED and First Aid, in order to be in the instructor class.

Cost to each Unit Leader is $95.00 per person.

Some reading will also be required between sessions bringing the total course time to approximately 13 hours.

The direct benefit would be to have each Scout within their respective unit given the opportunity to receive an Adult CPR card, which is an underlying pre-requisite for many Eagle required Merit Badges.

If there is any interest or questions, please contact me!

Impeesa District Service Opportunity – Get a Patch Too!

posted May 17, 2011, 10:25 AM by Dave Bateman   [ updated May 21, 2011, 10:35 AM by Web Master ]

The “Respect the Can” Anti-Litter Patch program was designed to complement Leave No Trace and Wake County’s Anti-Litter Movement which aims to raise awareness about litter and encourage Wake County citizens to take an active role in making our County litter free.

See 86it.com.

In the attached brochure there are details on how you can get your unit involved in the Anti-Litter Movement in your neighborhood.  Look carefully at the tasks that are required and the forms to fill out.  They aren’t big or complicated but your Unit success is dependent on a little preparation.

Tools and equipment for the Litter clean up are available to sign out at the Boy Scout Office on Atlantic Ave and are yours to use for free during your clean up.

LITTER CLEAN-UP SAFETY TIPS

Conduct litter clean-up during daylight hours

  • Roadside Clean-ups: Do not pick up trash on the road or median, stay at least 5 feet from the edge of the roads, face oncoming traffic, look up often, No MP3 players.
  • Wear proper clothing: long pants, closed-toe shoes (NO FLIP FLOPS), nothing that could impair vision or movement, appropriate for weather conditions.
  • Do not work during inclement weather.
  • Be alert for any venomous animals (i.e. snakes) or poisonous plants (i.e. poison ivy). Make sure that each person can identify a fire ant mound.
  • Do not remove any hazardous materials or dead animals.
